I did manage to get three of the four border strips on before an electrical incident caused a work stoppage. While preparing to press this second border, the iron began to make loud popping/clicking noises that even drew the cat's attention. In fact, Mini gazing upward at the iron was what made me notice the smoke coming out of the steam vent! The iron had shut itself off but the smoke was alarming and I quickly unplugged it and took it outside onto the concrete patio, afraid that flames would begin pouring out. But they didn't. I checked on it numerous times for 10-20 minutes and it cooled off by then so I could go to bed without worry. Scary moments, though! Tonight I plan to get the final border strip on and begin piecing the backing. I have a cheap backup iron that will work just fine :).

I also don't own i-anything but prefer to listen to the radio or audiobooks. I'm too spoiled with my flourescent lights, not sure how I would handle candle light for working...
You may be a throw-back to simpler technology but an electric iron is a MUST! Glad you weren't sewing by flame-light! Sheesh!! The border fabric is lovely, by the way.
Oooh, I like the quilt; and I don't have an iAnything either - even my cell is as basic as it gets - no texting even! I had an iron that did that a couple years ago too (Rowenta) and it scared the daylights out of me...all 3 of us went running as we were in different rooms than the iron - I'm in the bad habit of leaving it plugged in and turned on relying on the auto-off feature.

Oh, smoking anything in the sewing place can never be a good thing.

Scary times at the Orts house with an uncooperative iron. At least you have a back up!

Holy Smoke!!! Glad that thing did not ignite while you were pressing the quilt and ruin your work. Love the border fabric. Quilt on!
Yikes......that happened to me a few years ago....lots of fizzing and popping ....and being upstairs I raced in to the bathroom next door and popped it on the tiles in the middle of the floor....no flames luckily....but a dead iron all the same...just don't make them like they used to!! Nice borders btw!
Burning irons do put a damper on the quilting don't they. Glad it didn't turn into anything more serious.
I believe the iron was trying to contribute its sound effects to your music.
Beware the popping iron!
