Design Wall Monday--Nov 8, 2010

On my Design Desk today is the second project I'm making with the 9 patches from Julie K's swap.  I made up a few of the square-in-square blocks to see how my plan to emphasize the star in this layout is working  (quilt design from a Thimbleberries book).

Cinnamon star.

Cheddar star.

I am a little concerned that this is going to turn out just incredibly busy and not the scrappy look I love.  I want the stars to stand out, and they will be the only constant fabrics in the patchwork.  I'll probably have to make a lot more of the square in squares to see if I really like this.  I do love the cheddar and cinnamon Jo Morton fabrics!  Opinons, anyone?  Go to Judy's blog to see more Design Walls.

I spotted your star right off so I think you're on the right track, Annie. I love it - what a terrific idea.

I spotted the top red star immediately! What if you keep to all varied reds for star points throughout the quilt? Looks fantastic!!

You could make plain square in the corners and that would really calm it down. But I think it will be fabulous the way you have it..put them on your design wall together and then you will see how great it looks!

I like your idea. I don't think it will be too busy if you use just the two fabrics for the stars. Looks like it will be a very warm fall looking quilt.

I love Jo Morton fabrics....love, love, love them. I'm inclined to agree you'll need to do a few more and see how it looks. One thing you could try is making the 9 patches in med/light so the only fabric that reads "dark" is the cinnamon and cheddar fabrics.

I love both of these -- and it's making me a little hungry, too. LOL! I think you'll be able to keep the scrappy look and not have it look too busy. :)

I found the star!

I love the arrangement of these blocks. How could anyone not love something called Cinnamon Star!

Beautiful. And dont worry - sometimes I dont think a design is as prominent as we hope until you have it all together. This is going to look gorgeous.

I think using the constant fabrics keeps the busy-ness for happening. I love both fabrics. This is going to be a great quilt.

I love the cinnamon star. I can easily see the stars in both.

This looks great, I think it will turn out just the way you imagined it.

I love the blocks and think it will work out well. I'd make another 2 and put all 4 on the design wall to see if you like how it repeats. The light spots are going to draw the eye more than the 9 patches.
