Design Wall Monday--Jan 24, 2011

Not much to show on my Design Wall but there is something this week, as opposed to last!
The first few rows of the Kitchen Sink quilt.  It is coming together nicely.

Saturday I pinned the Comfort Zone quilt with my mom's help.  It is great to have a quilting assistant.  Thanks, Mom!  Now I have to come up with a quilting plan and get this finished in the next week.  I already know I have no appropriate thread to use so it's back to the fabric store for me. Oh darn.

This time when we set up the folding tables we propped them up with two pavers under each leg, raising the level of the tables by about 5 inches to a height of 34 inches, which is standard kitchen countertop height.  Working on a table instead of the living room floor required about the same amount of setup time (i.e., getting the tables/pavers from the backyard shed versus moving furniture and rolling up a big rug) and was so much easier on backs, knees and necks!  Go to Judy's Patchwork Times blog to see other Design Walls.

I hate pinning a quilt! But it has to be done. I bought some lifts for beds to put under the legs of my cutting table (haven't done that yet), and it's the same idea as you have for pinning. Definitely would be easier at counter height! So nice you had your mom to help.

I pin the center of my quilts standing up but I mostly sit in a rolling office chair. It is so much easier on my back and legs. I agree that pinning on the floor is just to painful.

Hey...I don't remember seeing this quilt...it's really cool! I love the excitement of a pinned quilt all ready to go to the machine!

Get yourself some PVC pipe, cheap at the hardware stores. And make sure the table legs will fit inside them. Cut them off at the height you want the table to be.

The pipe fits over the table leg and where the table leg bends is where it jams.

Bad description of an easy fix to raise tables.

I can see I need to invest in a massive table to pin quilts! It's such a great idea. Basting and I are not friends this week after a series of unfortunate Sunday incidents in that vein.

Love the Comfort Zone quilt!

I really like your Comfort Zone quilt, both colors and design. Great idea on the table. I still pin on the floor, though the time has come (and gone) when I need to be off my knees.

Oh working on a table is so much better. The older I get, the worse the floor is on my back. I love the Comfort Zone quilt.

Love the progress on Kitchen Sink!!

I think that raising the table on pavers is a really good idea. I hate crawling around on the floor trying to pin my quilt. The animals always appreciate a new place to walk or lay though! Both quilts are lovely!

Love the Kitchen Sink quilt - mine is at my long arm quilter as we speak. When you have a chance check out the new Scrap-basket Sensations -- lots more great quilt ideas - I'm in trouble - LOL! Happy stitching -

I wondered what I would do in the future to pin my quilts! Now I don't have to rush to finish them all! Love your progress. How do you pin the quilt before you know how you will quilt it? Do you end up unpinning as you go? Just wondering out loud as someone who procrastinates at this step!!!

An extra set of hands while basting is always nice. Great projects. I use bed risers to elevate my cutting table. It's really helped my neck.
