Erica used a light box and traced 24 of these Fleur de lis onto foundation paper for me.
I measured and pinned the papers onto the quilt and free motion quilted the motif. Voila, a quartet of Fleur de lis appeared on her quilt. Uh, not exactly in record time, however. That was due to some unsewing.
I tried outlining about 1/2" inside the block but didn't like the way it cluttered up the simple motif. I tried two blocks before ripping it all out and proceeding to stitch in the ditch around the big 4 patch. Then I ran out of bobbin thread in the middle of stitching the small center square. More ripping. My upper extremity workout was two hours long with this, wrestling it through my machine with its small throat area! But the lesson is learned and I know where everything is going on the next 20 squares. Except the core is showing through on the spool of thread I'm using so that means a trip to the store. Sigh. What a lovely stitching design. You might try a product called golden thread which allows you to draw the pattern on it and stitch through it.
I am lucky b/c I have the fleur de lis on a disk for my embroidery machine. I love the ease of using that machine for the quilting. It is a workout to quilt with a small throat space. Congrats on doint it.
Annie the fleur de lis look utterly stunning!
The fleur de lis is fab! That is a ton of work but it looks great. I am not in love with the ripping out of quilting stitches but have to admit I am becoming an expert. :(. I could never do that kind of work on a regular machine, you are so talented to be able to do it!
I like the way your fleur de lis look :) I'm having a hard time expanding my quilting beyond meandering and I can soooo relate to your comment about un-sewing!
I really like the fleur de lis, it looks great on the quilt.
What a great idea! Love it!
Like the Fluer de lis quilting motif. Hopefully it will not cause you too much more grief.
Great job! Don't you love the feel of accomplishment from doing your own quilting versus having someone else do it. Do you dream about some day owning a long arm? Or worry that your arms will become longer from quilting? hehehe
That unsewing just puts a kink into a day, doesn't it? The final fleur de lis are gorgeous on the block!
It looks fantastic!!!
Good job on you fluer de lis quilting. Can't wait to see the quilt finished. Hopefully you'll cut the sewing time in the next 19 blocks.
