Tuesday's Orts on Thursday

Tuesday's Orts--scraps and bits of thoughts and events that float around and land here semi-regularly.
  • Notes from a waiting room:  No one seems to know how to hem a pair of pants.  I saw them folded up, rolled, dragging, and puddling, on males and females.
  • My mom called me yesterday to tell me she found my favorite cola drink, Pepsi One, which had been discontinued in May, at the Smart & Final store.  She picked up a bunch for me.  Grant said he was sure I'd drink it fast enough to beat the "Best by" dates.
  • Traffic Rant:  Young drivers who tailgate you on a city street when there is another lane, then zoom around you in a show-off, in-your-face way. (This one is from my mom.)
  • The monthly Bunco game is at my house tonight.  Looking forward to lots of laughter and fun when the 12 of us gather together--once I get this disaster area cleaned up!
  • The house is quiet again now that Erica has gone and her friends are not stopping by. I was even able to get some laundry done.
Mini kept the basket warm while I was in the garage starting the machines.

I admit I am lazy about hemming pants. Maybe I could find a way to *quilt* my pants shorter? LOL. I have a new pair of pants, in a smaller size no less, that has been waiting 2 or 3 months now to be hemmed...

I have to let hems down--all my height is in my legs--so I don't wear them until the hemming is done. And I can beat Sarah's "to be hemmed" story. I have a pair that have been waiting about 2 years! I'd rather be quilting! : )
I thought for a minute that this photo was taken at my house (except for the cat). I have the identical laundry baskets and hamper. : )

I am the pant hemmer for the entire family...it's a disappearing skill apparently!
Hope your DH is doing better this week.

I used to play bunco, have fun!

I have to agree with Quilter Kathy, hemming is becoming a lost art (sewing on a button appears to be a close second).

Enjoy your bunco!

Oh yeah, just noticed they have it in LA and Hollywood (not sure exactly where you are). Nothin' better to do tonite, I guess.

I've personally seen 2 extreme methods of hemming. One gal was proud to show me how she used duct tape for quick and easy pants shortening, but the ultimate was a young guy who had staples in his jeans! I'm betting he had to use a heavy duty stapler to get through a couple layers of denim.
I'm sure (or I hope) that both were temporary measures.

Ah....the hemming of pants .....something I put off for ages then when I get to do it it really doesn't take that long...hardest part is getting the right length to start with...and I have found Rose to be no help what-so-ever when it comes to pinning up a hem! I must confess to having one pair of jeans "hemmed" with safety pins! I keep thinking I must stitch them one day...I may need to if I am going to travel I will be caught up in the metal detector! The best method by far though....the little jeans shop down the road where the owner does alterations....too easy!! (too lazy?? LOL)

Miss Mini is just a darling! Looks like you've had a good chance to sew even with company - fantastic! if I were you, I'd hoard that Pepsi-one, Annie (wink)!
Cheers!

I read recently that with home ec classes gone the way of manual typewriters, there's a whole generation of folks now who really don't know how to sew on a button or hem pants! Sad.
